"I thought about an old boyfriend a lot today. i don't know why. i thought about the time he got home from a trip and i came over to see him. his house was full of people but he just came over and took my hand and pulled me into his room and turned up gloria by van morrison as loud as it would go. I can't hear that song without remembering how fun that night was. or how fun it always was-- trying and failing to be quiet because he made me laugh so loud, or made me knock something over, or had me declaring something wildly because it felt good to be wild. One time in particular was the night he decided to teach me all the scientific names for all the body parts. he would say them and i would repeat them and we drank all night that way, getting tangled up and doing accents and getting lost from it and coming back again. There was a sweetness there. he never asked me to be his girlfriend, he just bought me a hair brush and put in it in his room, told me it was mine. it was yellow and he picked it out. on the way home from work i remembered it's his birthday today."

Masking off

This week, Lucy D and I painted a 'Wellbeing Wall' in Bristol Mind's reception. We created a painted mosaic effect by drawing a 3x3 inch grid all over a wall, using 4 different colors to paint the squares. It took an awfully long time, but nicely absorbing and almost meditative. Towards the end we found we were getting quite sloppy, so masked off some squares to make the much neater. I like the bleeding effect you get when using masking tape with drawing inks. It works but it doesn't work. A happy accident.

We recently caught up with one of our case-studies to see how he's doing and ask if the Light Box workshops he attended have made a lasting impression.

More Eggs Logs, I've already blogged about this, but it's too good - and recently sprung up in my mind, as it regularly does.

Back in 2004, in one direction it read 'Eggs Logs', in the other 'Logs Eggs'. Then it became free range, and then they've expanded their produce. I love farm signs, notice them, laugh at them. Look at that lettering, it's divine. nice and slanty.

IGFest: 2.8 Hours Later Zombie chase game

Phew, I'm knackered. I volunteered for igfest (Interesting Games Festival) last weekend 17th/18th September.

I was a chaser in the city-wide game '2.8 hours later' where players had to get to 6 different locations in a 4 mile radius of Bristol city centre - watching actors play out a scene in each location, giving a clue to where to get to next on their grid maps. Between each locations were chaser zombies, me and about 12 others - who jumped out from behind bins, cars, bushes, behind walls and sprinted after players.

Once caught, players become 'infected' - marked with a UV pen, then sent to finish the game. at the end, they were checked, any infected got put into makeup, and survivors got their photo taken and congratulated:

Players loved it, you pay £10 to play, and it's well worth it. Some of the locations included the old police cells in Bridewell Island, the old bank vaults next to Castle Park, Jacob Wells Car park, a disused shop on Park Street and public toilets on Park Row. This game also pays for the whole of the rest of IGFest, so it's well worth the money.

Volunteering for the game was a great way to spend the weekend - despite being completely knackered (unintentionally walking like a zombie too) I got to meet some great people, barely spent any money, I got to play all weekend. Sprinting after people who are terrified of you is pretty fun, I've never felt so powerful!

So I'm not back to work! The family I nanny for a bit are home from their month long holiday, and Light Box is back after it's month off too. I had a lovely week back home in Bournemouth, seeing my brothers and parents.

I'm really happy that I took my camera and focussed on taking lots of pictures last week. I had a lovely time on my dad's boat, snapping away and making us super-noodles whilst he fixed something, and I took some shots of a very old greenhouse at my brother's next-door-neighbours in Wimbourne.

Hillbilly costume

I had the pleasure of attending a Hillbilly party last weekend, And thought I would go all out with my costume. With some time on my hands, I created this 'hillbilly mask' - inbred big ears, big lips, furrowed brow, complete with extra finger. It took a whole day and a half of my life. I made it with mod-roc and papier mache.

Text Project

By taking quirky and inspiring mottos and sayings, mixing them with my own process of entering a dazed state of making through repetitive actions, this is my Text Project. I often have a market stall the Tobacco Factory Sunday markets, and various school fetes throughout Bristol.

Each piece is completely unique, with the lines drawn free-hand and each letter is hand cut. I use vivid-colored card for each design and a good quality mount. A simple yet elegant design for the home, and all made lovingly in Bristol

I have lots of popular pieces in stock. As well as this, I offer a bespoke service, so feel free to commission me.

I charge £6 for each 4” tall letter, and the mounting is at cost-price, i.e. an A3 sized piece would cost around £8 to mount. I arrange framing through Niche Frames, Bristol who can offer a large and varied range of framing options.

If you live out of Bristol, the cost of postage and packaging will be around £10 depending on the size of piece you select, although i prefer to hand-deliver as the work is easily damaged in the post. I will deliver for free if you live in the Bristol area!

Recent Sketchbook Drawings

I have been doing some drawing in parks, on pavements and at the harbour. Using this lovely ink - Encre Sennelier: "shellac based ink with a transparent satin finish". bought on the Graphotism website, which i really recommend for any kind of art material. They have lovely color-wheels to help you select color. I use a squeezy pen - a caricature artist at a wedding gave this pen to me after I enquired about his pen - kind chap. It has a long pointed brush which fills with more ink when you squeeze the pen. The cartridge is filled with black ink, but I dipped the end in the yellow ink, allowing the black to seep through a little.

I have been making some bird and people heads.

Made from paper-mâché - PVA glue & water with newspaper dipped into it. I make a sturdy cardboard base by wrapping some around a jar, and then cover with a couple of layers of paper-mâché to make it go really dry when hard.

Here's a short video I made for my final degree work at uni. I hired a spraybooth and sprayed 1,300 Gala apples a specific pink color of car lacquer. The process took a whole two weeks - three layers, and it was important to keep the stalks unpainted - so the applying and peeling off of masking tape was the most laborious part.

Most of my notebooks have poppy petals in them. I press them, wait about a month for them to throughly dry then peel them from the pages of notepads and sketchbooks, and add the dried petals to my stash. Some of this batch went a little mouldy, but they look beautiful with it.

Hello me

I helped out with a wedding recently, a semi wedding stylist if you will. Main jobs were making cake stands and designing the look of the cake table, (the bride asked every one in her book club to bake a cake each, instead of the regular wedding cake) creating the place settings and designing the table plan.

Table Plan

I hand-cut everyone's initial and stuck them onto the plan with velcro - this made it easy to make last-minute changes to the seating plan if guests couldn't make it. They chose trestle tables - with couples sat both opposite and next to each other. I was hoping that the plan would spell out something, but it didn't - not enough vowels. I would like to make something out of the letters, as a post-wedding present.

The whole day was a dream. Bristol Florists Bella and Fifi worked hard on the flowers, they were gorgeous too - some wild flowers, all seasonal and locally grown.

In lots of places, lots of people are doing some extraordinary things. This morning, after a good long Skype with my sister in New Zealand, I knew I wanted to do some blogging, find some new stuff, get on twitter, snoop around the internet a bit. So here's a great thing I found:

Saturday 10th July

60 points – ok so it’s a slightly made up number, but I think it’s fairly representative of the day. I cycled 117 kilometres to Brighton with many a country hello and nod along the way. Was a lovely ride. It’s no Tour de France, but I was still pretty please for a lone effort on a hot day.

Thursday 8th July

5 points – after my fellow cyclists, a lady in red, was barked at by an enfuriated oncoming rider, we shared a little “well good morning to him too” as I cycled past. A jolly end to an aggressive start. Some people just get on the wrong side of their saddle don’t they.

I'm inspired by this and want to start my own mission - both whilst cycling around Bristol and walking around, and I'll even count when I'm in my car - most people have their windows wound down in the sun.

It's almost a shame that when you get your film developed at a photo developers, you have the choice of getting a CD for an extra £1 or £2. I can never resist, and it saves my time scanning. With the film I got developed from my Pop 9, I got the Cd, and then cut up some of the prints, like this unflattering pic of Elena. Sorry Elena! She is the wrong way round too, but I like it.

They are like tiny little rocks, and they don't smell any more. They are turning powdery - I wonder if one day they will just disappear? The blue and baby pink apples are three years old now. Older, but bigger. Must be something to do with the lacquer? I just spray painted those two and the others were covered in car lacquer, two coats.

I wanted to upload a video I have of the process of creating these apples, but the internet is not on my side today. Instead, I have here my learning proposal, which I haven't worked on since, but still feels relevant to my practice now.

CONSTRAINTS, AESTHETICS AND ENJOYMENT.

I have an addiction to experimenting. A compulsive need to make things. I am experimenting with the process of limiting the creation of artwork. As well as this, I place importance on two inner workings; pleasure in creating and simple aesthetics. Both are vital to my work.

I have no control over THE HAPPY ACCIDENT. I have an influence over my materials, but they are ultimately allowed to do what they want. I am only manipulating, having minimal involvement, such as dripping, pouring, filling, hanging. I am not always part of the work, it creates itself in the time when I am absent. Time and chance allow this to happen. I witness what the materials do, which is absorbing, a degree of immersion is involved – not just being a witness, but being the work; making a performance.

It is important for me to be excited, stimulated by what I’m making. I have a constant dialogue with myself whilst making, whilst still working fast to avoid being too self conscious. The thinking process is important – to keep changing my mind, thoughts evolving and changing.

I have an encounter with the work, my hands transforming the surface. There is a lot of time investment and use of multiples. The monotony of making and labor intensity is important. I appreciate the ENERGY TRANSFORMATION which is taking place, I create rituals of making.

My work relies upon structure and good planning. I figure things out. It is casual, but has beauty and order. It has an intimacy to it, a sensual appeal.

Within this, I regularly work with creating objects which are natural but manmade, I am making things artificial, sometimes influencing the longevity of there natural things, preserving them. I am very drawn to using candy colors. This color selection is important. It is what’s first seen, catching the eye and drawing you in. “what is this”.

I place importance on two inner workings; pleasure in creating and simple aesthetics. Both are vital to my work. this simple aesthetic is shifting to become economy and lightness. I see that this is contained in each of my pieces, drawings and ideas. I embrace this and feel like I have found out what my art is about.

Recently colour has become more important, something to think about rather than to pick at random. Great efforts are going to be made in finding the perfect colour for my sprayed apples. The optic effects of this colour when applied to many units of the same shape will be immense. This links to my sensuality and the enticement of senses. The sickly smell of fermenting apples will increase this optical dazed effect – the viewer will find it absorbing to view.

The encounter with my work is extremely important at this stage. I am a factory worker and the monotomy of these tasks I make myself complete have an effect on me. The balance of control is off-kilter as I feel like I am being controlled by my objects.

AIMS AND THOUGHTS

At this stage, I am thinking about exhibitions, how my work will stand on its own, how it will communicate – will it be site specific? I need to develop a confidence with placement. What will it be like to watch the reaction of the audience?

The use of words and writing will become manifested in the work in the following ways:

o I am thinking about titling work, what that could bring to my work, or if it would detract from it.

o I am reading more text, such as Bachelard’s musings.

o I am thinking of writing my own texts, using my imagination, and having writing exercises – such as a piece on what I imagine my final work to look like.

I will also talk about my work more. Advocating the work, speaking about it with authority and care. Having discussions.

I want to use the camera more thinking of the idea of video art, playing with time. Attempting to capture something – a moment when something strange and beautiful happens.

Thinking about my ambition, looking to the future.

Commit to being present throughout my impending exhibitions. See this is a chance to advocate the work and be confident with it.

Exhibition Plan Lucy Barfoot

Description

My work is concerned with the sensations and placement of materials. I am attempting a detachment in the making, allowing accidents to happen and time to lead. Pleasure and attraction is involved in this. My exhibition piece lies somewhere between installation and sculpture.

The piece will be vulnerable, light, and it will have a presence in the space. I am buying 1320 apples wholesale. These apples will be varnished and colour will be applied. This creates a seal, starting fermentation inside the apple. This is a long process of decay from the inside out. it which will be in its initial stages at the time of the Farnham Degree show. the fermentation will shrink the apples, giving off a sickly sweet smell.

I have arranged to use a spray booth as Drakes Shop-Fitting in Bournemouth. I am liaising with the spraying technician, who has suggested using a lacquer paint mix, which would require three coats. The spraying will be completed before May, allowing some time to ferment in time for the degree show. The significance of using apples is to do with the minimal shape, yet keeping the essence natural. The accumulation of all these units is important also due to the repetition, both aesthetically and in the making; I become a factory worker with a production line.

The placement is key to my work. I am inspired by Richard Long’s closeness to materiality, and wish to create a perfect circle of apples (see drawings) The apples will have a relationship to the space. They will be placed directly on the floor, viewers will be encouraged to touch and get close to them, and will need to kneel or bend over to get closer to the objects.

Risk Assessment

There is a possible tripping hazard, which the audience will be exposed to. I will need to ensure that the apples can be seen from a distance, and I will need to look into weather it is advisable to put up a sign of some sort. This is more important than just health and safety as should someone tripped on the apples, this would be detrimental to the piece, as placement is key. I do wish for people to be crouching next to them, having a close look, so the placement of a barrier is not an option.

Exhibition Space Required?

A floor space, the work will be 10 foot by 10 foot, and some space will have to be made to allow for viewing. Ideally I there would be a large clearing before any other artwork.

Violence on the streets of Bristol

When walking home alone at 2am on Sunday night, I was looking for a taxi, and walked up Stokes Croft whilst doing a lot of looking behind me. I crossed the road to get away from shady characters and kept my eyes wide.

I was asked if I could call an ambulance for someone - he'd just been attacked and had blood all over his face, neck, body. He was spitting blood and shaking. IT was really disturbing, and as I waited for the ambulance with him, I told him he was lucky that there weren't any weapons.

I feel so sad that this happens, that people get hurt. This man was so shaken and this will impact his life, and I can't stop thinking about it.

Launching the Light Box blog

I have just launched the Light Box blog on Blogger! I did have the blog in the Light Box website, but I think blogs should be kept on blogger - they get more hits, people can follow them easier, and it's much more simple to blog on Blogger. It's a great feature of Blogger - being able to have more than one blog. and I can allow Lucy D to write for the new blog too, perfect.

Incase you didn't already know, Light Box is my charitable organisation. I am one half of its management, the Creative Director. We run a series of art workshops which advocate positive psychology, and had a manic month in March where we held 40 workshops, all free, in an empty shop in Bristol.

We've just finished writing our project report, and are now very busy patting ourselves on the back whilst thinking about the next project - which is to have our own premesis for a whole year, teaching stand-alone workshops and also courses, all for free to everyone and anyone.

I brought the wrong batteries for my Fuji cam to work, so that part of my 'photo heavy' holiday i planned didnt quite go to plan.

I'm in Carveiro in Portugal, and during the week of extra holiday due to the volcano, I have been pretty bored.

I finished all my books:
- A million little pieces by James Frey
- The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
- Generation X by Douglas Coupland
- A box of Matches by Nicholson Baker

All were Great, especially the Murakami which I've owned for 4 years and never quite red. It's massive. And I loved it, I can't even describe it.

So after the books were all read, I started writing letters to friends, writing a 'holiday journal', writing a personal journal, playing shit-head, playing Angry Birds on my phone and walked around a lot.

There are lots of wild flowers here, many pathes of unkept land. Lots of birds and bugs and also lots of my favourite flower, the poppy. I have picked hundreds, all transported back to my hotel room to be pressed in my sketchbook. They will take a couple of weeks to dry and become super thin and dry. Ill add them to my collection of dried poppies, which i am going to make something with one day soon. They are so fragile and ephemeral, just what I like.

Four Tet - There is Love in You

I have just got round to buying the newest album by Four Tet, 'There is Love in You' but have not listened to it yet! I want to save it for when I reallllly want to hear it. Soon.

I love trying to put music into words, and may try my own review once I've listened to the new album. But for now, here's a BBC review by Si Hawkins

"You have to admire Kieran Hebden for sticking so rigidly to his vision. Back in 2003 the London-based producer made an album called Rounds, which became rather more popular than he’d envisaged due to its winning mix of beautiful, organic-sounding melodies and novel, cleverly-manipulated samples. Radiohead invited him out on tour, tracks from the album began to pop up on everything from sportswear ads to television gardening shows, and Hebden looked set to become a quasi-household name.

Instead, two years on he released Everything Ecstatic, a record that upped the beats-per-minute dramatically in a bid to counteract the unlovely term ‘folktronica’ he’d been saddled with, and any suggestion of commercial intent. Those listeners who abandoned Four Tet at this point may want to give There is Love in You a spin, however, because, as the title suggests: the bliss is back.

Five years is a fair gap between Four Tet albums but then Hebden’s tracks are aural mosaics, painstakingly compiled to work on several levels. The skipping two-step of Love Cry, for example, may appear relatively traditional; but take a closer listen and there are intricacies aplenty, including an underlying synth whirr that sounds oddly reminiscent of the noise Fred Flintstone’s legs used to make when he carried the car to work. This presumably wasn’t the intention.

Even the more straightforward offerings, such as the aptly-titled This Unfolds, gently lull the listener in while sneaking a bewildering array of bells and whistles into the mix, so by the denouement you’re blissfully nodding along to what in less dextrous hands would be a chaotic maelstrom of noise.
There are a few recognisable Four Tet trademarks along the way, notably the chopped-up vocals and general CD-on-the-blink effects of album opener Angel Echoes, which, again, may sound slightly off-putting for those who wouldn’t normally purchase experimental electronica. But the soulful female voice, stuttering and struggling against the onrushing sonic wave, is so affecting that the track’s abstract nature becomes almost incidental.

It’s a theme that recurs throughout the record, and, indeed, that defines the Four Tet canon: mesmeric, melody-laden music, with varying degrees of difficulty. There is Love in You should be a fine introductory course."

Barfoot and Duggan have been busy creating an attractive shop front hoarding to use to board up the disused shops in Union Street, Broadmead, Bristol.

I found those pics of the boxes in THE MOST AMAZING BOOK IN THE WORLD, Tactile:High Touch Visuals by Klanten, Ehmann and Hubner. Published by Dgv in November 2007. It's only £26.80 in Amazon, and I found it in Urban Outfitters for £25. The rrp is £40!

Everything in the book is so delicious, I am so inspired. There is also 'Tangible', which is next on my list!

So the box pics are titled 'De Designpolite' made by students at the Utrecht School of Art in 2004.

The Text Project at Planet Pizza

Hurrah! My work is up in Planet Pizza Bishopston, Bristol. I am being honest here, I have never tasted a more delicious pizza, they are incredible! Confused man sculpture

My fingers made this silly little man out of clay, i don't know where he came from, but he obviously had to get out! I like his teeth the best.

And this is a bit of fluff i made from bits of fluff.

It reminds me of everlasting gob stoppers and my friend Jack Warren Meeks. Actually, It's pretty much exactly the same, and i only realised this since looking on his website. oh my!
